SPRINGFIELD, Ill.?

The federal government has rejected Illinois' request for a disaster declaration after a tornado swept through downstate Harrisburg.

Much of the town was flattened by the storm on February 29th.

Governor Quinn asked for disaster assistance for five counties; but the Federal Emergency Management Agency says the damage doesn't rise to the level of a federal disaster, so no federal aid will be sent there.

FEMA determined that state assistance, private insurance and help from community organizations will be enough to repair the tornado damage in Harrisburg, and there's no need for Washington to get involved.

Senator Richard Durbin says he'll work with Senator Mark Kirk to ask FEMA to reconsider.
