Eating Healthy But Spending Wisely | Frugivore Magazine

Eating healthy doesn?t mean you should have to break your budget or sacrifice taste to do so. It?s easy to get sucked in by grocery merchandising tricks, and it?s also normal for most of us to fall into a mealtime rut, eating the same foods over and over. You can save money and still have quality. A lot of people say that it?s cheaper to eat unhealthy, but with organization and creativity, you can eat healthy on a budget. To start, here?s a quick review of basic tips for healthy eating:

  • Limit your intake of junk food and alcohol
  • Drink lots of water (at least 8 cups a day)
  • Limit salty and sugary foods
  • Avoid eating many foods that are high in saturated fats
  • Make ?variety? the watchword of your eating

Following are a few more hints that can help you save money:

  • When cooking a big meal, make extra to freeze or use later in the week for lunches or quick suppers. Double recipes, then freeze half.
  • Save your vegetable trimmings to make your own vegetable stock. Not only do you save money, but vegetable stock also makes a nutritious base for casseroles, soups, and slow cooker recipes.
  • Buying in bulk is almost always less expensive; you can freeze perishable items (such as meat, milk, and even bread) in smaller portions to use as needed. It?s always a good idea to buy nonperishable items in bulk (canned foods, dried beans and grains, etc.).
  • Use less expensive cuts of meat for casseroles you slow cook; add extra vegetables and beans to make the meal go further. Capitalize on one-pot dishes, which generally save prep time, money, and dishwashing?and often make great leftovers.
  • Limit your dining out, especially when it comes to fast food, since you?ll find yourself spending unnecessarily on items that are high in fat, salt, and calories, which short-change you in the nutrition department.

Joint property disputes (among 3 brothers)

i have purchased a plot and constructed house with 02 other brothers. Initially only 02 floors constructed and since then i have been started living in ground floor considering my contribution is much more than their contribution in construction of house. Thereafter on my transfer to other location my two brothers requested me to allow him to live in the house and on posting back to delhi they will vacate the ground floor. On my refusal they started quarreling with me and my family. After living in 5 yrs in the ground floor my both brother made attempt to kill me. On the request of my relatives i agreed to vacate the ground floor and construct second floor. A mou signed and as per conditions i have given six months time for construction of second floor in the house after receiving of fixed amt fm both the brothers. They have made part payment and waited to proceed to my place of duty. On reaching my duty place i have recd a legal notice fm both the brothers stating that i have no right on the said property and threaten to vacate the ground floor otherwise they forceful enter in my ground floor. After 03 months i visited my house i have stunned to see that one of my brother captured my ground floor with all my personal belonging which i kept in the house by forceful opening the doors. After intervention of local police and relatives they have again insisted to sign another agreement and this time they paid the balance amt. On starting construction, they have made all the efforts so that i could not able to construct the second floor and go out of the house. One of my brother who serving in mha at that time started sending representation that i have grabbed the house with ill intention and make all efforts but on my visit to mha they have thrown him out to another ministry. Since they have not agreed to obey the settlement and tried to capture the house by adopting any means i have not started repaying home loan installment fm the date of their illegal capture of my ground floor and now the bank referred the matter to drt for debt recovery.
The summarise case is as under :-
i) sale deed of said plot is among all the three brothers.
Ii) housing loan taken fm bank in the joint name of one of my brother with me and another brother is co-borrower.
Iii) map for construction of 03 floor passed fm gda.
Iv) the house constructed against the approved map.
V) both the agreement are not registered fm court/registaar office despite express order of concerned ssp.
Vi) my both brothers illegally denying my share in the house and sending many representations to my department by themselves and their wives.
Vii) previously one of my brother purchased a flat at gurgaon with my late father's gratuity and i have also contributed as loan and another property purchased at new palam vihar with my second brother's name by using contribution of my late father's payable dues and also fm me. My both brothers are not ready to give back my share in the property and one of the reason for harrashing me for upsurp/grab all joint properties. At the time of purchase of two properties we were living in un-divided hindu family.

Emi deposited by me fm the date of taking the loan mentioned as un-accounted amount in the legal notice served from my brothers.

My case is common to personnel who are serving in Armed Forces who are posted far away from their native place and relatives of such personnel are eyeing on the salary & various allowances they are getting. Due to their very meager expenditure at duty place being providing free boarding & lodging by department and they are very disciplined and always try to out of any illegal activity having close look of conduct by their department.

Kindly intimate legal status of the case.

Before my discovery of the internet, in attempting to deal with Christian publishers, I came to realize what preachers have known for a long time. Many publishers use the ?Christian? name for a fast buck. Like others, they want to know who you know and everything else possible that might prove your book will sell on the merit of your name, only; without regard to what is actually inside the cover.

They, also, expect you to work so hard at your presentation that the book is ready for publication before submitting. Though, most of the time, it goes into a pile of manuscripts; to barely be skimmed, unless you have already developed a name.

In addition, publishers either want your writing to fit within their specific doctrinal guidelines or they want the writing to be so non-controversial that all religions will accept it. All this is without consideration as to if the Spirit is actually speaking through the writing.

Poetry critiquers don?t like me very well, either. Oh, wait! Maybe it?s the other way around.

First, you write, in hope of meeting someone else?s acceptance and approval. Talk about messing with your self-esteem, that will do it. You may have to spend money for them to even look at your writing. But when you do, you are almost assured they will tell you what you had hoped to hear ~ that your writing is absolutely wonderful!

You can pretty much guarantee that those who offer self-publishing will really love your writing, too. However, the price for encouragement, on that level, is considerably higher.

Then, there are contests wherein expense is required, either to enter or to claim your prize. In other circles, we call it gambling.

Though, if you are otherwise accepted, you may be required to pay for the honor of having your writing listed among them. However, unless you tell all your friends, no one that knows you will ever see it. And, all the rest won?t even remember your name.

Such as these take unfair advantage; manipulating the heart strings of those whose dream in life is to, one day, be a writer. In fact, most such cons stay within legalized limits; but steal from your wallet, none-the-less.

I am not a writer wanna be. In fact, I?m not even a writer. I do not seek to become a writer. But, I could keep going with this skeptism as, when I do write it is with motivation and purpose. Maybe I just have a lot of issues. :)

What got me going, this time, was a shared link to a web site implying they were interested in original Christian writing submissions. However, in addition to all else, they suggested that if you wait for the Spirit?s moving, you may never write. So, at that point, I was no longer annoyed but a bit ticked. If the Spirit isn?t in it, it shouldn?t be written. Shame on them!

When God inspires one to write, it does not need criticized. There are times when a different arrangement of words would read more smoothly. And, definitely, proofing helps the reader to be able to better absorb content. However, the intent in which God gave it should never be changed. God doesn?t do anything inferior. Only, some take it upon themselves to think they know more than God.

But, also, as is really obvious when the only accepted poetry submission is ?non-rhyming poetry?, regardless of content, those have pre-determined what is good poetry while they look down upon the rest. That might be a good deal, to at least know what is expected. Only, no two critics agree on what good poetry is.

So, there are no guidelines that the ?would be hopeful? can obtain ~ unless the writer throws out their own style, to match someone else?s, in hopes of being accepted into that group. And, that could even be a good thing, if only that group were a ?for real? publisher. But, what really happens is authors sell their soul to be accepted by a group of writer wanna be?s.

As it is with many, one?s dream of writing is not all that different from the self-defeating teen-age dream of, one day, winning the Miss America pageant; only with more substance. If you are fixed on becoming famous by the world?s methods, go right ahead and let the world keep kicking you in pants. As Christians, when we follow the majority, we lose sight of why we are writing and end up inviting our own defeat.

However, if you are inspired by Holy unction, you will write whether you ever become famous or not. And, when God inspires you to write, there are souls waiting for that message. If you ever get a glimpse into the importance, significance, and magnitude of that, you will share your writings whether you ever get paid or not ? and you will stop welcoming criticism. Our accuser?s name is Satan.

Also, when God inspires a writing, it doesn?t really belong to you. So, when ?represented to be? Christian (Christ like) people holler about copyrights, I start to lose respect for them. It is one thing for another to claim and or make a profit off your works. It is another to threaten and sue when someone has paid such a compliment as to share your writing with others it might, also, minister to. The same goes for all forms of Christian ministry. For however many ways God opens doors, the seed He gives can and should be multiplied again, and again.

It is God?s job to determine how many times one?s seed gets multiplied. Our part is to be available, faithful, and obedient to share that which He blesses us with. And, the more you share, the more God gives you to share. Also, the better you will get at it! Then, as it works in with God?s timing and you are spiritually prepared for what comes next, God will open more doors ~ then more.

If your calling leads in the direction of publishing, publishers will find you. For others, writing may have helped develop confidence in being a better speaker. Whatever your path in life is to be, He who calls you will also do it. His yoke is easy and that takes the pressure off us.

Let us forget the wanna be?s and put our focus on being a servant. God makes all things beautiful, when it is time.

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly;
and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give;
not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you;
that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things,
may abound to every good work.

Friends baffled by killing of Ala. college student

(AP) ? Classmates and friends are questioning why a police officer fatally shot a University of South Alabama freshman who was naked and had been banging on a window at police headquarters.

Campus officials didn't give any indication that Gil Collar, 18, of Wetumpka had a weapon when he was shot. A university spokesman said he was fatally wounded about 1:30 a.m. Saturday after an officer heard a bang on a window and went outside to investigate.

A statement issued by university spokesman Keith Ayers said Collar, who wrestled at Wetumpka High School before enrolling at South Alabama, assumed a "fighting stance" and chased an officer before being shot. The officer tried to retreat numerous times to defuse the situation before opening fire, the school said.

But sophomore Tyler Kendrick said campus authorities haven't provided any satisfying answers about why Collar was killed.

"Really, it just upsets me that there's no other way to apprehend an unarmed student rather than shooting him. I don't understand that," Kendrick said.

Joshua Frye said it seemed the officer could have used something other than a firearm to stop Collar.

"What I feel is that a cop has more than a gun ...," he said.

The officer was placed is on paid leave, and an autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Campus officials said the confrontation was recorded by security cameras. The video and other information has been turned over to the district attorney and the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, which will review the shooting.

Colgan Meanor went to high school with Collar and then enrolled at the same college.

"He was a great, loving guy who always made people smile," she said. "He's not the kind of guy that people knew him and said he would do something like this."

Collar was the second person killed on the South Alabama campus since last year.

A university freshman was charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of another teenager who was slain in an on-campus apartment in July 2011. The victim was a visitor to campus and was not enrolled, authorities said.

Ayers said South Alabama, located near downtown Mobile, was still "a very safe campus" despite Collar's death.

White shark diets vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Researchers develop editing toolkit for customizing zebrafish genomes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Mayo Clinic researchers and an international team of scientists have developed a highly-efficient means of editing zebrafish genomes for research purposes, eliminating a bottleneck that has stymied biomedical scientists from using the fish as a model for human disease.

The details appear online today in the journal Nature.

For many researchers, zebrafish are becoming the model of choice for genetic studies. However, the inability to efficiently target genetic modifications has delayed their use by some. The Mayo team used an improved variant of artificial transcription activator-like effector nucleases, or TALENs, to provide a new approach.

"By using genetic engineering tools called TALENs and synthetic DNA to make defined changes in the genomes of our fish, we are able to make small changes (just a few nucleotides) as well as add a specific sequence for biological gene switch applications," says Stephen Ekker, Ph.D., senior author and head of Mayo's zebrafish core facility. "This is the first time we've been able to make custom changes to the zebrafish genome."

Dr. Ekker says this toolkit opens the door to a range of new experiments in zebrafish, including modeling of human disease by introducing small point mutations, designing regulated gene alleles, and developing classical structure/function experiments using an animal model system.

This new approach has implications for other model systems, including mice, rats, flies and worms, and possible applications in stem cell research.

"To our knowledge, this TALEN toolkit also is the most active described to date," says Dr. Ekker. "This has important implications for the growing TALEN field, whether used in fish or any other cells. We used this higher activity for genome editing applications. We also used it to conduct a series of somatic gene function assessments, opening the door to an array of non-germline experiments in zebrafish."
